ATTRACTIONS

NEAREST TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Bankura is one of West Bengal's most culturally and geographically diverse districts. Known as the "Land of Red Soil," it offers a blend of ancient terracotta heritage, rugged hills for trekking, and serene forests.
BISHNUPUR
The Cultural Heart. Often called the "Terracotta Town," Bishnupur was the capital of the Malla Kings. It is famous worldwide for its unique architecture and Baluchari sarees. Bishnupur is often referred to as the "Open Air Museum of Bengal." For nearly a thousand years, it served as the capital of the Malla Dynasty, whose kings were great patrons of art, music, and architecture. Because stone was scarce in the Bengal floodplains, the Malla kings used the locally available red laterite soil to create terracotta (burnt clay) masterpieces that have survived for centuries.
MUKUTMANIPUR
Often called the "Queen of Bankura," Mukutmanipur is a tranquil town located at the confluence of the Kangsabati and Kumari rivers. It is one of the most popular weekend getaways in West Bengal, known for its vast blue waters, lush greenery, and the second-largest earthen dam in India. The Kangsabati Dam:- The star attraction is the 11-kilometer-long earthen dam. Walking or driving along the top of the dam provides a panoramic view of the massive reservoir, which looks like an endless blue sea surrounded by green hillocks. Best Time to Visit October to March (Winter).
SUSUNIA HILL
Susunia Hill is one of the most significant landmarks in Bankura, often described as an open-air museum of history and nature. Rising to approximately 1,442 feet, it is older than the Himalayas and serves as a major hub for both pilgrims and adventure seekers. Susunia is a treasure trove for historians. It is famously home to the oldest rock inscription in West Bengal, dating back to the 4th Century AD. Trekking The climb to the summit is moderately challenging but rewarding. The trail takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, offering a panoramic view of the Gandheswari River.
BIHARINATH HILL
Standing at an elevation of 1,483 feet (451 meters), is the highest peak in the Bankura district and the fourth highest in West Bengal. Often called the "Araku Valley of West Bengal," it is a sub-Himalayan gem that offers a mix of adventure, spirituality, and raw natural beauty. Biharinath is famous for its "trio" of natural elements: Jal (Water), Jungle (Forest), and Pahar (Hill). The Landscape The hill is part of the Eastern Ghats and is surrounded by dense forests of Sal, Segun, and Mahua trees. The entire landscape turns a fiery orange-red with blooming Palash and Shimul flowers.
JHILIMILI FOREST
Jhilimili Forest, often called the "Darjeeling of South Bengal," is a serene natural destination located in the Khatra subdivision of the Bankura district in West Bengal. It is situated roughly 70 km from Bankura town and sits at the border of Purulia, Bankura, and Midnapore districts. The name "Jhilimili" translates to "sparkle" or "twinkle" in Bengali, a name inspired by the shimmering micaceous soil and the way sunlight filters through the dense canopy of trees.
SUTAN FOREST
Sutan Forest, often referred to as the "Baro Mile-er Jungle" (Twelve-Mile Forest), is one of Bankura’s most pristine and offbeat nature destinations. Located about 60 km from Bankura town and near the Jhilimili range, it is part of an elephant corridor that connects to the Dalma Hills in Jharkhand. The "Southern Dooars" Because of its dense greenery and hilly terrain, Sutan is often compared to the Dooars of North Bengal. It is thick with Sal, Mahua, Piyasal, and Palash trees.
JOYRAMBATI
Joyrambati is a serene village in the Bankura, world-renowned as the birthplace of Sri Sarada Devi (famously known as the Holy Mother), the spiritual consort of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (Gadadhar Chattopadhyay). Unlike the rugged hills of Bankura, Joyrambati offers a peaceful, rural atmosphere perfect for spiritual reflection. It is almost always visited alongside Kamarpukur (the birthplace of Sri Ramakrishna), which is just about 5 km away.
JOYPUR FOREST
Joypur Forest is a hidden gem in Bankura, offering a stark contrast to the historical terracotta temples of nearby Bishnupur. It is a dense, lush canopy of Sal, Teak, Palash, and Mahua trees that creates a serene atmosphere, often referred to as the "green lung" of the region. The forest is most famous for its Cheetal (Spotted Deer). You might also spot wild boars, foxes and wild elephants that migrate through the corridor, especially during the winter months.
